  1. My statement above should not be misunderstood. I do not intend to condemn any religion as the cause of violence, allthough I myself am an atheist. What I do condemn is the stupidity of some people trying to force there opinion or there interpretation of a religion on others with brute violence instead of arguments. I am strongly convinced that most people are sain and that we should not let ourselves be divided by the insainity of a few. Allthough it was not Voltaire, but his biographer Evelyn Beatrice Hall who wrote it down, it still stands: "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it"

Yes, of course. And atheism is the cause of more of 100 millions of death in the atheist regimes of China and USSR.
    And?

  3. @Ano1: Actual causes are rooted much deeper into the nature and conditions of living. Radicalism of any sort usually appears when conditions are bad and people are stirred up by leader types who see a chance to advance their position. No such things when people live in wealth. The teachings of christianity didn't change since the crusades or European religious wars, but conditions and interpretations did. Some old texts don't make the difference. People interpret them any that suits. Radical ideologies is a symptom rather than an idependent cause.
@Ano2: Not at all. Those deaths were inspired by radicalisation of communist ideologies. Unlike religions and other ideologies, atheism doesn't have any sort of prescriptions. One cannot do anything in its name, but believe there is no god.

  4. freedom of speech is freighted with responsibilities; just because we can say or write something, it doesn't mean we should. If my office had been attacked previously by fanatical fuckwits and the life of my staff was in danger and possibly those of police, security and passers-by I'd make my point without the representation on the cover. This is a terrible and indefensible crime, but we cannot deny we live in a multi-cultural society, most of us, getting along peacefully and without the desire to belittle and insult a major tenet of their beliefs.

  5. @chris_c: I think an important distinction between ridiculing real people (or unchosen properties) and unprovable beliefs (or chosen properties) should be made. If I want to believe in an invisible dog, I should prepare to receive criticism and ridicule for that belief. Same with an unprovable religion. This should keep people mentally sharp. It's hard to ridicule beliefs that are sound. However ridiculing someone for unchosen properties, like looks, disabilities etc. is something completely different.
The problem is that radicals make unprovable ideas personal and compulsory and defend them physically instead of intellectually. A multi-cultural society that allows or condones such practices digs its own grave.
